The Strongman Champions League was developed by Ilkka Kinnunen, and Marcel Mostert, longtime strongman promoters, with significant contests to their credit worldwide, and was originally launched in 2008. Kinnunen & Mostert described SCL as "a new episode in strongman."

The Strongman Champions League is not only a spectacular competition on-site, but it is also broadcast all over the world with a total reach of more than 1 billion viewers. Each competition has a prize money total of $15,000 – $20,000, with a minimum of 12 athletes that compete in it.
